can propose two different visits of the old city. In the second one, there is a supplemental fee for entry to the Count's Castle.
Visit 1 - 1h30
The Old City of Carcassonne and the St Nazaire church
€ 149
Description of the visit
Our guide, expert on the Middle Ages and the history of Catharism, will take you on a tour of the old city and you will discover the double ramparts that ring it, the Narbonne Gate, the outside of the Count’s Castle, the narrow cobble-stoned medieval streets, and the St Nazaire/ St Celse Church.
Please note
Unlike the next tour, this one includes the visit of the church and a more detailed walk between the ramparts.
Visit 2 - 1h30
Old city of Carcassonne and a walk on the Ramparts
€ 149 + €6.5/pers.
Description of the visit
In 1 ½ h you will have two distinct but complementary visits :
A short visit of the old city including the Narbonne Gate, the outside of the ramparts and the outside of the Count’s Castle
A visit of the courtyards of the Count’s Castle and a walk ON the western walls of the old city (approx 30-40 minutes)
Entry fees for the Count's castle
Adults : € 6.5 per person (group of 20 minimum, or 8.50 € per person)
School groups: the entry fee is a flat rate of € 30 for a group of 30 students. One teacher is allowed in free, the other adults must pay € 8.5.
Please note
The walk along the western ramparts includes many steps going up and down. Once the walk has begun it is impossible to turn around and go back. Those who are afraid of heights or have problems walking stairs are invited to wait for the group in the Castle’s museum.
This tour does not include a guided visit to the Basilica St Nazaire/ St Celse. Unlike the previous tour, this one includes a long walk between and ON the ramparts
The Count’s Castle is closed the 1st of January, the 1st of May, the 1st of November, the 11th of November, and the 25th of December. The walk on the ramparts is therefore not possible on these dates.
The meeting place with the guide
For each visit, we will decide together with you, and based on your needs, where the best place would be to begin the visit: the guide can either wait for or join up with the group.
At the group’s hotel if it is in the walled city
At a restaurant if it is in the walled city
At the main parking for coach-buses if the group arrives in Carcassonne at the moment of the planned visit.
Number of guides
The rates that we indicate are for a sole guide. If you wish, you may choose to have two or three guides in order to create smaller groups. The rate for the visit would then be multiplied by the number of groups you have planned on.
Please note the following:
For visits to Carcassonne, which are entirely by foot, we limit the number of participants to 50 for each guide retained. For more than 50 people, a second guide is necessary.
If your program includes a walk on the western ramparts, it is highly recommended that the number of people per group be less than 50 so that all those participating can hear and benefit from the guide. The pathway on the ramparts is very narrow and people must walk in single file – there is no place for the guide to have more than 25 standing around to listen.
Our rates
The rates indicated for each visit are valid all year, including Sunday and most official holidays.
There are only three dates that require a double rate: New Year’s Day, the first of May and the 25th of December.
